Working on the WindsThe First Wind: Liver, Pericardium, and Heart

(Pages 52–57)

Press the points with your elbow. Flush out wind after each point.

Press point 35 (above the navel, left and right) and point 32 (below the navel, left and right).

Press point 37 (above the navel, left and right) and point 30 (below the sternum).

Release wind by loosening under the ribs and massaging the liver. Have student make the liver's sound (sh-h-h-h-h-h).

4. Press your knuckles gently into points 22 and 23 on the left side of the ribcage (above the nipple, or between fourth and fifth ribs); spiral counterclockwise. Have student make the heart's sound (haw-w-w-w-w-w) and the triple warmer's sound (hee-e-e-e-e-e).

5. Flush winds from heart area by spiraling your hand above the heart and down along the left arm.

6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 on the right side.

7. Release the sternum and heart area with your knuckle, working around the breasts on women. Flush down along the left arm.

8. Press point 53 (above the knee). Find it by laying your hand directly over the student's knee. Extend your thumb to inside of the student's leg, grab the thigh muscle, and press with your thumb. Flush wind down, then repeat this step on the other leg.

Working on the WindsThe Second Wind: Tongue, Eyes, and Head

(Pages 58–65)

Massage the soft area under the chin and press point 15 (under chin).

Massage jawbone back/forward/under with thumbs. Have student tighten and loosen the jaw by clenching his teeth and then opening his mouth repeatedly while you massage both sides.

Press your knuckle on point 13 (below the earlobe, at jaw edge). Work on both sides while student makes the liver's sound subvocally (sh-h-h-h-h-h).

Place your knuckle at a 90-degree angle on point 2 (center point above hairline); massage in a spiral.

Press point 3 (mid-forehead), point 4 (mid-eyebrow), and point 5 (above eyebrows). Massage the upper eye socket with your thumb.

Turn the student's head and spiral your knuckle on point 10 (outer edge of each eye). Do both sides together. Spiral your knuckle on points 8 and 9 (on the centerline above each ear), massaging both sides together.

Spiral knuckle on point 27 (Wind Pond, above the base of the skull, on both sides of the centerline) and make a curlicue to release stagnant chi. Gather winds with swirling hands into earth.

(Pages 66–72)

Use your elbow on student's navel points to loosen the small intestine.

Alternate inhaling into the heart and exhaling with the heart's sound (haw-w-w-w-w-w), with inhaling into the kidneys and exhaling with the kidneys' sound (choo-oo-oo-oo).

Press points 35 (just above navel) and 33 (just below navel) on the left, then on the right.

3. Press point 38 (beside navel) on the left side, then point 32 (below navel, away from centerline) on the left side. Then press point 32 and 38 on the right.

4. Press point 36 (above navel, away from centerline) first on the right side then on the left. Flush out through knee point 53 (inner thigh muscle).

5. Press knuckle on point 8 (above ear) while supporting head with your other hand. Work on both sides.

6. Press point 53 (inner thigh). Flush wind down and repeat on the other side.

Press point 32 (below navel) on the left then the right.

Press points 41 (lower tip of hip bone) and point 40 (on hip bone) on the right side, then 40 and 41 on the left side.

Press point 48 (upper leg) on the left then the right. Use tip of finger for this point.

The following points need to be done on one side only—usually the left.

4. With student lying on her back, press point 21 (below collarbone).

5. With student sitting up, press points 20 (above collarbone), 75 (outer edge of shoulder), and 25 (armpit, with student's arm raised).

6. Massage the Heart meridian (inside of the left arm), down to the pinkie finger, pressing point 77 (inner elbow) along the way. Pinch the corners of the pinkie nail. Flush winds down the left arm.

7. Press your thumbs on point 69 or 54 (behind kneecap) and point 55 (above outer shin, below knee).

8. Press your thumbs on point 66 (inside of foot, below ankle). Flush wind down legs.

9. Press elbow on point 45 (between sacrum and hip). Flush wind down legs.

Use your elbow to press the navel points. Remember to flush wind out after each point.

1. Press point 35 on the left side (just above the navel), then point 33 on the left side (just below the navel). The press point 33 and 35 on the right side.

2. Press point 36 (above point 35) first on the right, then on the left.

3. Press point 41 on the left side, then the right (on the lower tip of the hip bone).

4. Spiral and hold your knuckle on point 1 (Crown point) as student connects with perineum and presses point 43 (perineum). Flush/vent from head down the arms and out through the legs.

5. Spiral with thumbs or elbows on point 57 (inner calf below knee), then use thumbs on point 66 (below inner ankle).

(Pages 84–88)

The navel points for the sixth wind are the same as those for the fifth wind.

Press point 35 on the left side (just above the navel), then point 33 on the left side (just below the navel). Then press points 33 and 35 on the right side.

Press point 36 (above point 35) first on the right, then on the left.

Press thumb on point 15 (under the chin), then press knuckle into point 13 (edge of jaw, below earlobe).

Point 69

4. Stretch student's calves and Achilles tendons by pushing the feet toward the navel and rotating them in a circle.

5. With student laying on stomach, press point 69 (behind knees, between the two muscles). Flush wind down the legs.

6. Slapping technique: With an open palm, slap the back of the leg, arm, wrist, or ankle. Strike sharply to create a stinging sensation. Do not work on varicose veins. Flush the wind down.

7. Close session with Monkey Dancing: Have student lie on his back and raise his arms and legs up. Shake them enthusiastically while laughing and breathing deeply into the abdomen.

Working on the WindsThe Seventh Wind: Heart

(Pages 89–92)

Press point 35 (above navel) on the left side and point 33 (below navel) also on the left side. Then press points 33 and 35 on the right.

Press point 38 (to the side of the navel) on the left and the right, then point 36 (above navel) on the right and left.

Support your student's face with one hand and press your knuckle on point 13 (below ear) with the other hand.

Press point 74 (Bubbling Spring, on the sole of the foot) while your student pulls her toes toward her navel. Have her bring kidney energy up from the feet along the insides of her legs to the perineum, then into the lower abdomen, around the kidneys, and rising to the heart.

As you flush wind out through the feet, ask your student to make the heart's sound (haw-w-w-w-w-w) while drawing heat from the heart down to the kidneys, lower back, legs, and out through the toes to the earth. Encourage student to swallow saliva and belch frequently.

(Pages 92–95)

Press point 35 on the left (just above navel) and point 33 (just below navel) also on the left. Then press points 33 and 35 on the right.

Press point 38 (beside navel) on the left and point 32 (below navel, away from centerline) also on the left. Then press points 32 and 38 on the right.

Press point 37 (above navel) on the right side, then the left. Press point 30 (just below the sternum). Be careful not to press on the tip of the sternum, which is very delicate.

Massage chest area using the heel of the palm. Spiral and shake your palm heel, then press your knuckle on and between the ribs. Encourage student to breathe into the pain.

Massage sternum with knuckle, gently on the sternum's tip. Flush wind down through the arms.

(Pages 95–99)

Press point 35 (just above navel) on the left and point 33 (just below navel) also on the left. Then press points 33 and 35 on the right.

Press point 36 (above the navel) on the right side, then on the left.

Press knuckle into point 22 (just above nipples) on both sides. On women, this point can be found approximately between the fourth and fifth ribs. Flush wind down the arms.

Press point 40 on the left side (just above hip bone) and point 41 also on the left side (lower tip of hip bone).

Press point 49 on the left side (inside lower pelvic bone), on the left side.

Then press points 49, 41, and 40 on the right side. Flush winds down the legs.

On the left foot press points 63 (behind inner ankle bone) and 66 (below inner ankle bone). Then press point 55 on the left (front of leg below the knee) and flush the wind down the leg.

Press points 63, 66, and 55 on the right leg, and flush the wind down the leg.

Working on the WindsThe Tenth Wind: Pain, Numbness, and Heat

(Pages 99–103)

While working on the navel points below, rest a finger on point 19 in the notch of the sternum.

Press point 35 (just above navel) on the left side, then the right. Then press point 36 (above point 35) on the right side, then the left. Flush winds down the arms.

With your knuckle, thumb, or finger, press point 19 (notch in upper sternum) and point 18 on both sides (above clavicle, near point 19).

Massage point 17 on both sides (on throat, below the notch on the vocal cords).

With your elbow, press point 20 (brachial plexus) while student turns his head from side to side. Work on both sides, then press your thumb on point 25 (in the armpit). Flush wind down the arms.

On either foot, press points 67 (inside of foot, below and forward from ankle bone) and 66 (inside of foot below anklebone).

Press point 74 (Bubbling Spring, on the sole of the foot) while sup-porting student's foot.

Press points 67, 66, and 74 on the other foot. Flush winds out.

Working on the WindsThe Eleventh Wind: Nerves and Back

(Pages 103–6)

Press point 35 on the left (just above the navel) and point 33 on the left (just below the navel). Then press points 33 and 35 on the right.

Press point 38 on the left (beside navel) and point 32 on the left (below the navel, away from the centerline). Then press points 32 and 38 on the right. Press point 37 (above navel) on the right side, then the left.

Press point 30 (just below sternum). Do not press on the delicate tip of the sternum.

Massage below the navel with your fingers, then have student place his palms over navel area while imagining a fire or burning sun baking his abdomen.

5. Massage point 75 (in deltoid muscle on outer shoulder) on both sides and point 20 (on shoulders at the base of the neck) on both sides. Flush winds out through the arms.

6. Press your elbow on point 45 (between sacrum and hip bone). Shake your arm and slightly push the hip bone down toward buttocks. Flush wind down through legs and feet.

(Pages 107–9)

Press point 35 on the left (just above the navel) and point 33 on the left (just below the navel). Then press points 33 and 35 on the right.

Press point 38 on the left (beside navel) and point 32 on the left (below the navel, away from the centerline). Then press points 32 and 38 on the right.

Press point 37 (above navel) on the right side, then the left.

Press point 30 (just below sternum). Do not press on the delicate tip of the sternum.

Press point 41 (on the lower tip of the hip bone) on the left side, then the right.

Massage the sternum with your knuckle, also working on and between the ribs. Work around women's breasts. Have student make the heart's sound (haw-w-w-w-w-w) and release any excess heat or cold through the feet.

Flush wind down from left side of chest through the left arm and from right side of chest through right arm.

While supporting student's foot with one hand, press point 74 (on the sole of the foot) with your elbow. Flush the wind out.
