'Good' bacteria

Honey can also contain probiotic lactobacilli and bifidobacteria that discourage the overgrowth of potentially harmful gut bacteria.

These gut-friendly bacteria come from bees' honey sacs and are generally present only in honey less than two to three months old. Summer honey has the highest levels.

They are absent in honey from bees fed with sugar supplements.

Health benefits

Honey's 'good' bacteria increase the proportion of probiotic bowel bacteria (see page 20).
